Qualin Akalbeth
My name is Qualin Alkabeth. My family, The Akalbeth family, was a rich family outside the city of Gheldaneth in Mulhorand. They owned an ancient palace surrounded by gardens. In the garden of the dead was the family pyramid and a temple ruin was located in another garden. The palace held many dark halls and many a secret.
Gheldaneth is a port city and the second largest city in Mulhorand. The city is governed by the priests of Thoth, and the largest building is not the palace but the great university whose towers line the northern wall of the city.
I grew up in his ancestors’ palace. My father, Eranel, and my mother, Inama, were important members of the family but spent much time away from the palace. I grew up with my three years older brother, Ghalan and spent most of my early years in the family palace. In the palace lived, in addition to the servants, other members of my family – my uncle Maruk and his family (the wife Urda and their two children Thoda and Radaka), my mother Inamas mother and father, my aunt Arada, and my uncle Hargoth with his child Jilara.
I was given a private teacher from young age, a sorcerer named Jonadir. I was teached languages and the society and customs of Mulhorand. Jonadir had much patience with me and told me many old stories that I still uses for guidance. It soon became appearant that I had magic powers and some accidents happened. Jonadir had to leave when I was almost 7 years.
The next teacher, a young sorcerer from Gheldaneth thought I was only trouble and he could not handle me. It soon became clear that I needed an able teacher.
Luckily my grandmother, Athira, came to my parents’ aid and teached me for a while. She was a woman from Rashemen possessing great powers. Athira took good care of me but my parents thought Athira taught me a bit too much too fast and Athira also had other businesses.
The day I turned 8 I accidently touched an old, powerful, sceptre and called forth a great power. The power was defeated but my family was worried. I had some competent teachers in sorcery but none of them could handle me in a good way.
At the age of 9 I and my brother were sent to a small “school” of sorcerers, bordering Thay, for studies. The teachers thought I was talented but that I was sent home after seven months. My brother Ghalan stayed in the school.
Back at the palace my “studies” soon became focused on teaching me some manners. At the age of 11 I was sent to a mage in Gheldaneth in order to get me more civilized. I started learning about magic in general and especially about the planes of existence.
Three years ago, when I was 12, the family were attacked by group of crazy Mulhorandi priests. Everyone in the palace but I was killed. I was at the family palace, away from my teacher in Gheldaneth, but hid in the servant quarters and was captured – thought to be one of the servants. I was sold as a slave and entered service of Nardi, a Durpari merchant. I worked in the merchants’ mines a bit east of Gheldaneth. After a year I managed to escape with the aid of magic.
I went to my ancestors’ pyramid. There I set free the spirits of my ancestors and took some family heirlooms. I fled the city and soon I had some nightmares and visions that led me to the Raurin desert – visions showed me a gtreat pyramid. I joined a caravan from Mulhorand to Zinkalar. In Zinkalar I travelled south alone towards the Raurin desert.
Near a great mountain range I saw an incoming storm. By the foot of the mountains I came to the edge of a dark forest. I found relatively safe place to sleep in the edge of the forest. I was awaken by many agressive deformed animals and had to flee into the forest. Soon lost in the twisted and evil forest i wandered around until I found a gargantuan white tree. I entered a portal into the great tree and in that dreadful place I found remains of a great court now laid to waste. In this distorted place I battled monsters and beasts. In the darkness I met some kind of spirt – an apparition of a beautiful queen. Beasts were everywere but at last I managed to destroy a great dark crystal guarded by a demon. I was wounded but a silent silvery spirit led me to a small cave where I could rest. The refreshing water from a pool healed my wounds and I found a pair of boots there. I fell asleep and dreamed of the queen. She called me “Rauthar” and told me to use that name when sealing with elves. When I woke up I found myself in the edge of the forest again, as if it all had been a dream.
Back n the desert I soon joined another caravan - some people from the Sandvoyagers’ Guild. In the desert the caravan was attacked by gargantuan black worms. I fled into the desert. I travelled all through the desert for many days until I came close to the great pyramid of my dreams.
One night I came to some ancient ruins guarded by a great but featureless statue. When the night fell an old man came, shadowy figures stalking nearby. The old man spoke in the night and the words seemed to have great effect on me – he convinced me into going to the faraway city of Waterdeep. I don’t remember much more and I soon fell asleep, dreaming of strange figures dancing in the dark.
I woke up in a damp cellar in the city of Waterdeep. In my pocket there was an envelope with a rusty key and a note with an address: “Sailors’ End no. 9”.
