For this illustration, I had a clear image in my head before starting out. The bunker, the circular opening, the girl beneath it and the autumn leaves. I also discovered quickly that it would be a rather empty room, similar to the feeling you get in an abandoned house.
And I also realised that the light from above felt quite hopeful. Like a way out. Even when you are stuck in dark thoughts, you can often imagine an opening, a potential brightness beyond the current hopelessness. It might not be within reach, but it will at some point, waiting for you. So, don’t lose hope when your day takes a dark turn. There’s a light above your head, an escape route you can always come back to.
Technically, I got the room, the opening and the girl in place first. Some furniture moved in and then out again. The Game and Watch in the girl’s hands, a Donkey Kong from 1982, was a late addition. The most challenging part was the layers of debris. To make the placement look right, I ran a simulation where they fell from above, with some air turbulence tugging at them. I also shattered the wall behind the viewer, letting the rubble spread from the left. Both turned into nice physics simulations, where randomness played a big part in the process.
