"Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph".

"- So how'd you end up like this?
- Well, it's a long story.
- It sure is.
- In fact, if it was a movie, it would take three or four sequels just to do it justice."

The quote "Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph" is from Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian story, "Beyond the Black River," first published in 1935. The line, spoken by a borderer, encapsulates Howard's philosophical view that civilization is a fragile, temporary construct and humanity's inherent nature is more aligned with savagery and instinct.
