The diversity of our sample may likewise hint at the efficacy of TTRPGs as an intervention, being shown to be highly accessible to a diverse audience. Though TTRPGs were historically conceived by and designed for a narrow audience (that being heterosexual cisgender males; Schröder 2008; Sihvonen and Stenros 2018), market research has shown an increase in the proportion of non-male players since the mid-1970s (Brace 2012). This may indicate that TTRPGs have a growing ability to service diverse audiences more so than other interventions that may not be as meaningful, have barriers to access, or are cisgender-dominated. We substantiate the accessibility of D&D given that almost 17% of participants in the present study were transgender or gender-diverse despite no direct recruitment from these communities.

Future research should expand on this finding further and investigate whether sexual minorities or neurodiversity are overrepresented in D&D groups in a similar manner to gender minorities. It is additionally worth noting that we solely recruited participants from the (online-active) D&D community within New Zealand, and thus the generalisability of our findings to other populations may be limited. Though we do not anticipate any major differences in findings across other countries, future research should nevertheless endeavour to determine whether D&D groups possess similar meaning in different populations, particularly in countries where D&D or TTRPGs may not share the same popularity.
